AI is starting to appear in elderly safety marketing. Here is what it genuinely adds to a fall alarm, what it cannot do, and the questions to ask anyone who claims it.

If you have started shopping for a fall alarm for an older loved one, you may have noticed a new word creeping into the brochures: AI. Some of it is real engineering. Some of it is a marketing sticker on the same motion sensor everyone has sold for years. This guide is our honest attempt to help you tell the difference, including where our own product genuinely uses it and where it does not.

What a fall alarm is without AI

Almost every fall alarm on the market, from the free Seniors Alert Scheme pendant to premium fall watches, works the same way underneath. A motion sensor watches for the signature of a heavy fall, a sudden impact or a rapid drop, and raises the alert when it sees one. Simpler pendants skip detection entirely and rely on a button being pressed.

There is nothing wrong with this. Sensors are proven, cheap and fast. But a sensor has one built-in weakness: it only knows about a single instant. It cannot tell a dropped wrist from a dropped person, which is why sensor-only devices either miss soft falls or cry wolf on hard knocks, and why some brands hand the family a sensitivity dial and make the tuning your problem. What AI genuinely adds

Strip away the buzzword and AI in elderly safety means one useful thing: the system learns what normal looks like for one particular person, and uses that to add context a sensor cannot have.

Everyone's normal is different. One person is in bed by ten, another potters around past midnight. One walks to the shops every morning, another rarely leaves the garden. A system that learns those rhythms can do genuinely helpful things: describe the day in plain words, treat a quiet morning as the lie-in it usually is, and notice when a day stops looking like that person's ordinary day.

That is the honest, buildable value of AI here. It is judgement accumulated over weeks, for one person, not a crystal ball.

What AI cannot do

Be equally clear-eyed about the limits, because the marketing often is not.

  • It cannot catch every fall. Learning a routine does not change the physics of detection. No system, ours included, catches everything, and we say that plainly.
  • It cannot see inside the house. A watch knows movement and location, not which room someone is in or what they are doing.
  • It cannot replace signal, charge and wearing. The three fundamentals of every alarm are untouched by intelligence: the device must be worn, charged, and within mobile coverage.
  • Prediction claims deserve caution. Some products now advertise that AI can predict falls days in advance. At best these systems spot risk patterns, and they can be wrong in both directions. Treat any prediction presented as a promise as a red flag.

Questions to ask anyone selling you AI

If a provider puts AI on the box, these four questions sort the engineering from the sticker:

  1. What exactly does it learn? A real answer names something specific about your loved one's routine. A vague answer ("advanced algorithms") usually means the sensor has not changed.
  2. What does the learning actually change? Does it alter what the family sees or when alerts fire, or is it a line on the website?
  3. What are its limits? A trustworthy provider volunteers what the system cannot do before you ask.
  4. Where does the data live and who sees it? Learning a routine means holding data about it. The answer should be short and clear.
